I've recently had the pleasure of working with Bristol Old Vic and Little Bulb Theatre on the promotional imagery for their Winter children's production. I submitted an initial rough based on the working storyline that Little Bulb Theatre had at the time of commission. I then modified this rough a few times (see below), adding in or removing some of the animal characters, changing facial expressions, adjusting the composition and title treatment before commencing on final artwork.
I approached the creation of the final artwork in much the same way I would prepping for a screen-print, so tracing the outline of the shapes per colour. Shading was also sketched and scanned in, along with various textures generated with inked hand-rollers. I then formatted and coloured in all these elements digitally, to allow a greater flexibility with composition and potential edits.
Bristol Old Vic required the illustration to be completed in two formats, landscape and portrait, to suit their advertising requirements. They also requested that I provide the title, animals and background parts of the illustration as separate elements, to enable their in-house design team to use these across other media - e.g. brochures, flyers, production notes.
