I'm an illustrator and I love working with people, helping create visual solutions that are engaging, inspirational and imaginatively capture the message and identity of a given brief - be it an editorial illustration, a promotional campaign or a large-scale public facing artwork.
Drawing is always the starting point for me when solving problems with an illustration. Depending on the project, I will then build on those initials sketches - working across a variety of media, both digital and traditional. This has allowed me to be fortunate enough to work with a whole heap of awesome clients.
I love the eclectic nature of the jobs that I'm commissioned for, from wonderfully diverse magazine articles to one-off poster material for print and online campaigns. Telling stories through illustration, reaching new audiences and helping explain or expand a written idea is a real thrill.
Highlights, so far... drawing for a Nokia ad campaign, producing an illustrated sole design for Clarks and illustrating the first NSPCC mail-out booklet are just some. Having a training in painting and illustration (Falmouth University) has certainly helped when working on large-scale public artworks, for example when painting live on the BBC's DIY SOS programme or creating a colourful "urban forest" of enormous trees painted on the supporting columns of a gloomy city flyover.
A Children's Hospital commission, where I transformed a 200m stretch of stark corridor into a playful, illustrated journey was a 3x3 International merit winner and also shortlisted in the AOI World Illustration Award. My work has also been highly commended by the Macmillan Children’s Prize and several of my illustrations are used as examples of good practice in the book, ‘Illustration - A Theoretical & Contextual Perspective’ written by Professor Alan Male.
The creative city of Bristol is where my studio is based. I love collaborating with local artists, businesses and being part of the city’s thriving cultural scene. Institutions, such as Bristol City Council, Bristol Old Vic and Tobacco Factory have worked with me on promotional, design, mural and info-graphic commissions. But, it's also been been fascinating and rewarding working with new initiatives and start-ups, helping establish their identity.
There is a joy in helping others, so I leap at the chance to share my knowledge, via talks, running workshops, organising student study visits and curating exhibitions. I also co-host 'PIP' the Bristol AOI meet-up events - an illustration industry discussion and social networking event.
Thanks for checking in and please don't hesitate to get in touch.
